As an 11-piece band, the one question people ask us is why such a long name and why such a big band? The idea of the band name and the group was conceived by Sean aka “Stymie” Sharp, after initially being recruited by the original Stymie group in the City of Compton (Los Angeles County). Having relocated to San Francisco and witnessing his new band’ s electrifying performances, Sean realized that the band needed it’s own identity and added the tag name ‘The Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra’ (PJLO). Stymie & The PJLO are currently working on their 3rd cd, ‘The Funkativity Joint’. These long time Bay Area favorites wish to soon notify the world at large of their arrival as serious contenders in the music world.

At shows, I always get approached by fans of the band who say they hear a lot of Frank Zappa in our music and I usually respond, “Oh snap that’s cool“.

But, If you really listen, you’ll hear the influences of Carl Sterling, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. That’s the God Honest Truth !!! I personally have found inspiration from a myriad of sources – Desmond Decker (may he rest in peace), Elo, Frank Zappa, Joni Mitchell, Mavis Staples, George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, Eddie Hazel, Erykah Badu, Prince, Fishbone, of course Red Foxx, Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, etc..

But I have also been inspired by the films of Robert Crumb, Terri Zwigoff , “Crumb”, Daniel Claves and Paul Thomas. Cartoons back in the 40′s were so imaginative both musically and visually. Artist back in the day went all out. They didn’t have computers or yuppie skills to fall back on – No safety net ! I like to think when I perform it’s without a net. Either I do it or I go SPLAT !!!!!

Legendary underground publisher Last Gasp turns 40 this year and to celebrate, they are throwing a party and art show at 111 Minna Gallery.

The Last Gasp 40th Anniversary Art Show assembles a top-drawer lineup of artists – the haut monde of lowbrow.  Over the past four decades, Last Gasp has published hundreds of artists in the underground comix and kustom kulture, to pop surrealism and street art movements.

Last Gasp is one of the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books & comics in the world, as well as being a distributor of all sorts of weird ‘n’ wonderful subversive literature, graphic novels, tattoo and art books.

Last Gasp was founded in 1970 by Ron Turner. Last Gasp’s first publication, Slow Death Funnies #1 came out on the first “Earth Day,” April 15, 1970. Ron Turner’s enthusiasm for underground comics, and in particular their autobiographical aspect, has been the driving force behind many groundbreaking publications.  Last Gasp published Justin Green’s highly acclaimed confessional Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary in 1972, a book that became an inspiration to many artists now working in the autobiographical style. “Art Spiegelman, who won the only Pulitzer Prize for cartooning, has said he would never have started to do the autobiographical story of his family (in the graphic novel Maus) unless Justin had done it first. And Robert Crumb said the same thing,” said Turner.

Today, Last Gasp publishes 12-20 new titles per year, focusing on Lowbrow and Pop Surrealist artists, as well as graphic novels. The company has 18 full and part-time employees and is based in San Francisco. In addition to publishing, Last Gasp distributes for large and small publishers worldwide, providing a steady counter-cultural stream of books and other printed matter that spreads over six continents.
