Sketch Tuesdays resident DJ Pre-K & special brew sponsor PBR. Also get a sneak peak at our Feb. exhibit “Harum Scarum” w/ David Ball, Jesse Balmer and Katherine Brannock which opens on Thursday, Feb. 2nd.

111 Minna Gallery is pleased to announce the first ‘Sketch Tuesdays’ of 2012 and the 63nd time we’ve held the event! Each month the gallery hosts an evening of live art making featuring both established and emerging Bay Area artists. Inspired by Southern Exposure’s Monster Drawing Rally, 111 Minna offers patrons the opportunity to see local artists at work and get acquainted with them. It is also a way for artists to meet each other and to be inspired by each other’s creative process.

Sketch Tuesdays offers the local arts community a place to congregate, to talk, to create and to be seen. There is usually room for artists to just drop in and start drawing, but the good seats are reserved for the invited artists.

Art is for sale at reasonable prices and will be displayed until the event closes. This is a great opportunity to become a collector and to meet some very talented people!!

“..another example of really good value and the fun of collecting is the once a month Sketch Tuesdays at 111 Minna; 20 artists set up and draw or paint. Then they put it on the wall for between $5 and $30; the work is beautiful, cheap and plentiful” – Ron Turner, Last Gasp

“Once a month 111 Minna hosts Sketch Tuesdays featuring live drawing from local Bay Area artists. They drink and create and then sell their works for ridiculously low prices. I mean you can get some work from established artists for like $10. Granted the work isn’t one of their best, but shit, if you ain’t got the cash to buy a $1,500 piece by one of your favorites, $10 sounds pretty good to me. You can start collecting some of your favorites without breaking the bank… But besides all the art buying possibilities, it’s just a good time. Drink with your friends and watch talented artists create.” – John Trippe, Fecal Face Dot Com

“As evidenced by the endless hoopla surrounding Bob Ross’s television escapades, the artistic process is something people want to know more about. In response to this irrepressible need, 111 Minna Gallery offers up Sketch Tuesdays. The event itself intends to foster new relationships within the local visual art community, hopefully birthing dialogue, new ideas, and collaboration” – Michael Harkin, SF Bay Guardian

“The basic idea is that artists get together and hang out and make art and then they put it up for sale. The prices are exceptionally magnanimously marvelous, ranging from $6 to $30, most under $20. And we’re talkin’ good art by good artists. So for those of you who love art, but who aren’t doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, shipping magnates, patricians, children of privilege, and so on and so forth, Sketch Tuesdays is very possibly the best option in town to jump start that art collection you’ve always dreamed of having.”

- Alan Bamberger, ArtBusiness.com. Thank you Alan for your mind-numbingly radical documentation of art in SF. Please visit: www.ArtBusiness.com

Your 111 Minna host/curator is Brad K. Alder. If you have any questions please find him running around during the event if you are an artist or a buyer. Co-curated by Attaboy/Hi-Fructose.

Sketch Tuesdays at 111 Minna Gallery was founded by artist and curator Sacha Eckes in 2006, meaning this is the 63rd one held. For history of artists who have participated in Sketch Tuesdays go here and type Sketch Tuesdays. Over eight hundred artists have participated in this event since it’s inception, and growing.

Ron Turner’s enthusiasm for underground comics, and in particular their autobiographical aspect, has been the driving force behind many groundbreaking publications. Last Gasp published Justin Green’s highly acclaimed confessional Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary in 1972, a book that became an inspiration to many artists now working in the autobiographical style. “Art Spiegelman, who won the only Pulitzer Prize for cartooning, has said he would never have started to do the autobiographical story of his family (in the graphic novel Maus) unless Justin had done it first. And Robert Crumb said the same thing,” said Turner.

Opening Reception + Jay Howell’s Zine Release Party: Friday, April 1st, 2011

Last Gasp is one of the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books and comics in the world, celebrating its 41st year in business.

Over the years they have published, and in some cases brought to light, some of the most respected and talented artists working today, including such luminaries as R. Crumb, Justin Green, Bill Griffith, Mark Ryden, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Frank Kozik, Todd Schorr, Winston Smith, Spain, and Robert Williams to name but a few.

As well as publishing, Last Gasp is a distributor of all sorts of weird ‘n’ wonderful subversive literature, graphic novels, tattoo and art books – supplying them to bookstores on six continents.

Last Gasp was founded in 1970 by Ron Turner. Last Gasp’s first publication, Slow Death Funnies #1 came out on the first Earth Day, April 15, 1970. Subsequent comics included the all-women’s comic It Ain’t Me Babe, and Skull Comics.

One of Japan’s most infamous artists, Toshio Saeki, will soon have his work on display at 111 Minna Gallery, in San Francisco, California.

Called “the godfather of Japanese erotica,” Toshio Saeki has cultivated a unique and shocking style – blending traditional Japanese technique with his own twisted imagination. Saeki’s artwork is a synthesis of depraved vision and incredible artistic ability. “A famous writer once described my works as ‘obviously peculiar’ and I cannot completely deny that,” he said. ”I want to surprise people, make them happy, and if possible, even completely enchant the minds of those who see my work. To realize that, I will choose whatever method it takes, and will not limit myself.”

Saeki embraces the controversial nature of his work. He seeks to challenge social norms by placing the unconscious in plain view.

“In the modern world, where one rarely stops to think about the truth behind the moment, you might enjoy it if you take a peep at my mysterious and strange illusions,” he said. “To those who frown at them, I want to place the drawings right in front of your face and ask if you really disapprove. I’m always thinking, how wonderful it would be to give shape to psychological pictures which everyone hides and holds deep within them.”

Saeki’s Technique: the Chinto Printing Method

In a modern version of traditional Japanese woodcut printing, Saeki creates finished work in conjunction with a printing professional. The artist typically prepares only black and white originals. He does not apply color directly to these pieces, but instead uses overlays to enumerate the precise values of the colors he wants.

Saeki works with the terminology of the four-color printing process: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). For example, he indicates a woman’s skin tone should be reproduced with 10% magenta, while her nipples should be 60% magenta. Most of the men in Saeki’s artwork have a skin tone that is 30% magenta, 20% cyan, and 50% yellow.

He calls this method chinto printing – the picture is complete only after it has been printed. It is a modern version of the ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodcut prints or paintings produced between the 17th and 20th centuries. Ukiyo-e were works of collaboration between the eshi (artist) and the surishi (printer). Saeki is paying homage to this style, and considers himself an eshi.

New Book: Onikage (‘Demon Shadow’) will also be for sale at the opening reception of the exhibit —

A new book by the artist, which was just released by Last Gasp features a selection of Saeki’s previously unpublished works. The art is shown in a gorgeously large format. Throughout the book, paper vellum overlays re-create Saeki’s unique method for adding color to his black and white artwork. Both original black and white renderings and finished color artwork is shown. However, the reader is not allowed to see every image in all stages. Like the artist, the viewer must use his or her imagination to complete these peculiar pictures.

Publication date: August 2010 Published by: Last Gasp

111 Minna Gallery is pleased to announce the eleventh ‘Sketch Tuesdays’ of 2010 and the 50th time we’ve held the event!

Check out Alan Bamberger of ArtBusiness.com for his great review of Sketch Tuesdays.

Your 111 Minna Hosts/Curators are Brad K. Alder, Jay Howell & Angela Holmes. If you have any questions please find them running around during the event if you are an artist or a buyer.

111 Minna Gallery is pleased to announce the ninth ‘Sketch Tuesdays’ of 2010 and the 48th time we’ve held the event!

Check out video coverage here & in The Chronicle’s “Art Adventures”. Wow this shit is old anybody wanna help me?
